Quick answer: winter in Japan runs from December to February. Snow is deepest in January and February in Hokkaido, Tohoku and the mountains of Nagano and Gifu, while Tokyo and Osaka rarely see snow. If you can pick only one window, go in early February 2027 for the Sapporo Snow Festival (February 4–11, 2027).
Winter shows a completely different side of Japan: thatched villages buried in snow, monkeys soaking in hot springs, frozen trees turned into “snow monsters” on Mount Zao and a whole city of ice sculptures in Sapporo. This guide covers the weather, the 2026/27 winter festival calendar, the eight best things to do, two sample itineraries and what to pack for your first snowy trip.
Japan Winter Weather by Month
Japan stretches more than 3,000 km from north to south, so winter feels very different by region. Tokyo and Osaka are cold but dry with lots of blue sky, while in Sapporo the average daytime high in January stays below 0°C.
| City | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo | 3.8 – 12.0°C | 1.2 – 9.8°C | 2.1 – 10.9°C |
| Osaka | 5.3 – 12.3°C | 3.0 – 9.7°C | 3.2 – 10.5°C |
| Sapporo | -4.0 – 2.0°C | -6.4 – -0.4°C | -6.2 – 0.4°C |

8 Best Things to Do in Japan in Winter

1. Sapporo Snow Festival (Hokkaido)
Japan’s best-known winter festival runs from February 4 to 11, 2027. Odori Park shows giant snow and ice sculptures, Susukino glows at night with ice carvings, and Tsudome is the family zone with snow slides. Sapporo hotels sell out early for festival week, so book two to three months ahead.
2. Otaru Canal and the Snow Light Path
Otaru is about 40 minutes from Sapporo by JR train. During the Snow Light Path (expected February 6–13, 2027), hundreds of candles and snow lanterns line the canal and old streets from 17:00 to 21:00. By day, walk Sakaimachi Street for glassware and music boxes and eat fresh seafood.
3. Snowy Shirakawa-go (Gifu)
This UNESCO World Heritage village of steep thatched “gassho-zukuri” farmhouses is at its most beautiful under deep snow. The 2027 winter light-ups are expected on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, and you cannot just turn up: you need village lodging, a reserved parking space or a light-up bus or tour from Takayama or Kanazawa. In the daytime the village is open as usual; buses take about 50 minutes from Takayama and about 75 minutes from Kanazawa.
4. Snow Monkeys in Hot Springs (Jigokudani, Nagano)
Jigokudani Monkey Park is the world’s most famous place to watch Japanese macaques soak in a hot spring surrounded by snow. Expect a 30–40 minute walk on a snowy forest trail from the parking area, so wear boots with good grip. It is best in January and February, and it takes about an hour from Nagano Station by local train and bus.
5. Zao “Snow Monsters” (Yamagata)
Freezing winds coat the fir trees on Mount Zao with thick layers of rime and snow until they look like giant “snow monsters” (juhyo). Ride the Zao Ropeway up to see them; they usually peak from late January to late February. Some evenings feature a light-up, so check the official ropeway schedule before you go.
6. Ginzan Onsen (Yamagata)
Wooden Taisho-era inns along a river, gas lamps and falling snow make Ginzan Onsen one of Japan’s most photographed winter scenes. Because of overcrowding, the town limited day visitors in winter 2025–26 (December 20 to March 1): between 17:00 and 20:00 you needed an advance ticket and a shuttle, and no day visitors were allowed after 20:00. Rules for 2026–27 are announced in autumn; the surest way to see it at night is to stay at one of the inns.
7. Skiing in Niseko or Hakuba
Niseko in Hokkaido is famous for light, dry powder snow, and Hakuba in Nagano hosted events of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Both have English-speaking ski schools and full rental gear, so complete beginners can learn in one or two lessons. January and February have the best snow.
8. Tokyo in Winter: Lights, Onsen and Mount Fuji
Not into snow? Tokyo is still great in winter: the air is dry and clear, which makes it one of the best seasons to see Mount Fuji. Many districts run winter illuminations from November through Christmas or into February. In the evening, warm up the Japanese way with nabe hot pot, oden or ramen and a soak in an onsen. I stayed at Park Hotel Tokyo, where on clear days you can see Tokyo Tower and Mount Fuji in the same frame (watch the video, in Vietnamese).

What to Wear and Pack for Japan in Winter

- Layers: thermal base layer, sweater and a windproof coat. Trains and shops are well heated, so you will take layers on and off all day.
- Boots with grip: essential for Hokkaido, Shirakawa-go and the trail to the monkey park.
- Heat packs (kairo): sold in every convenience store; stick them inside your clothes or keep them in a pocket.
- IC card (Suica, ICOCA): for trains, buses and convenience-store purchases.
- Think twice before driving: winter rental cars in Hokkaido usually come with snow tires, but icy roads are a different world if you have never driven on snow; trains and buses are safer.
- Visa: many nationalities can visit Japan visa-free for short stays, while others, including Vietnamese citizens, need a visa. Read our guide to Japan visa fees in 2026 and the real cost of a trip.
