Oshino Hakkai (Eight Springs of Oshino) is one of the region’s most magical natural spots — eight crystal-clear freshwater springs fed by snowmelt from Mt. Fuji’s summit, emerging in a tranquil traditional village. The water is so extraordinarily clear you can see to the bottom of each spring in vivid detail.
The springs are surrounded by traditional thatch-roof warehouses, creating one of the most picturesque rural scenes in all of Japan. The village remains largely unchanged and is far less crowded than the lakeside resorts. A perfect place to slow down and experience the serene Japan of old paintings and haiku poetry.
5. Chureito Pagoda at Arakurayama Sengen Park
The iconic image of Japan — a pagoda rising against Mt. Fuji with a backdrop of blooming cherry blossoms — was taken at Chureito Pagoda. Even without cherry blossoms (which peak in late April), the view from the 398-step staircase above Fujiyoshida city, with the pagoda framing the perfect cone of Fuji, is breathtaking in every season.
In summer, arrive early morning (before 8 AM) for the best chances of seeing Fuji before clouds gather. The pagoda is part of Arakurayama Sengen Park, accessible on foot from Shimoyoshida Station (Fujikyuko Line).
Getting to the Mt. Fuji Region
- From Tokyo (Shinjuku): Fujikyuko Limited Express direct to Fujisan/Kawaguchiko Station (about 2 hours) — the most scenic and convenient option
