Sri Lanka ETA approved in 5 minutes. I know that sounds like a clickbait headline, but this is exactly what happened when I applied on April 30, 2026: submitted my application at 19:23, received the approval email at 19:28. Five minutes. This guide walks through the entire process step by step, based on that real experience.
What Is Sri Lanka ETA?
Sri Lanka no longer issues traditional passport-sticker visas for tourism. Since 2012, the country moved entirely to an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system — a digital permit applied for online, with results sent by email. There is no stamp, no sticker, no embassy visit required.
Key difference from a traditional visa:
- ETA: 100% online at eta.gov.lk, result by email, processed in minutes to hours
- Traditional visa: embassy appointment, paper documents, 3–5 business days, sticker in passport
Important: Vietnamese passport holders are NOT visa-exempt for Sri Lanka. An ETA is required before you board the plane. Airlines will refuse check-in without a valid ETA.
What You Need Before Applying
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date into Sri Lanka
- International credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard — Vietnamese domestic cards won’t work)
- Active email address to receive the result
- Your planned entry date and accommodation address in Sri Lanka
- A digital photo: JPEG, white background, under 500KB
- Full passport details: number, issue date, expiry date
Tip: Check your passport expiry right now. If it expires within 6 months of your planned travel date, renew it before applying — a valid ETA won’t help if immigration turns you back at the airport for passport validity.
Cost of Sri Lanka ETA in 2026
| ETA Type | Stay Allowed | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tourist | 30 days/visit, max 90 days | USD 52 | Most common |
| Transit | 48 hours | USD 32 | For connecting flights |
Fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome. Only apply through the official website eta.gov.lk — third-party services charge more for the same result.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply
Step 1: Go to eta.gov.lk
Open eta.gov.lk — the official Sri Lanka government ETA website. Click “Apply for ETA.” The interface is clean and shows 4 numbered steps: Submit Application → Review Information → Payment → Confirmation.
Step 2: Fill in Your Personal Information
Complete the form exactly as it appears in your passport. Required fields:
- Surname / Family Name (as in passport, without diacritics)
- Other / Given Names
- Title (Mr/Mrs/Ms/Dr)
- Date of birth, gender, nationality (select Vietnam)
- Country of birth, occupation
- Passport number, issue date, expiry date
Accuracy matters. A typo in your name or passport number can cause problems at immigration even if the ETA was approved.
Step 3: Review Your Information
The system shows a summary of everything you entered. Read through it carefully. This is your last chance to correct anything — once you pay, edits are not possible.
Step 4: Pay USD 52
Pay by international Visa or Mastercard. Most Vietnamese bank cards with international payment activated work fine — Techcombank, VPBank, and Vietcombank international cards are reliable. The payment process usually takes 1–2 minutes.
Step 5: Receive Confirmation by Email
After successful payment, you’ll receive two emails from evisa@sltidc.lk: a payment confirmation and then the ETA approval document. Save this document — you’ll show it at check-in and at Sri Lanka immigration.
How Long Does Sri Lanka ETA Take?
My experience: 5 minutes. In general, approval is typically within minutes to a few hours for straightforward applications. Occasionally it can take up to 24 hours during high-traffic periods. Apply at least 48 hours before your flight to be safe.
Online vs On-Arrival: Which to Choose?
There is a visa-on-arrival option at Colombo’s Bandaranaike Airport, but it costs USD 100 (nearly double) and involves a long queue after a long flight. There is no practical reason to choose on-arrival over online unless something goes wrong with your ETA at the last minute.
Important Warnings
- Only use eta.gov.lk — there are dozens of fake look-alike sites that charge 2–3x the price and occasionally don’t submit your application at all
- Print your ETA or save a screenshot — don’t rely on mobile signal at the airport
- Lost confirmation: log back into eta.gov.lk with the same email address to retrieve it
- One ETA = one entry (standard tourist ETA is single-entry)
