September is one of the best months to visit South Korea. The summer heat and humidity are fading, the sky turns a crisp, clear blue, and the first hints of autumn begin to appear. Here are 3 unique experiences that make September in Korea particularly special.
1. The Lone Tree at Olympic Park, Seoul
Olympic Park (Olym’pic Park) in eastern Seoul is a beloved green space built for the 1988 Summer Olympics — but its most famous resident is not a stadium or monument. It’s a single zelkova tree standing alone in the middle of a vast meadow: Korea’s most photographed tree, beloved for the way it captures each season differently.
In September, as the sky deepens to an intense blue and early autumn grasses turn golden, the Lone Tree (Weddingtown Tree) becomes especially photogenic. Morning mist often lingers in the meadow, creating an ethereal, painterly atmosphere.
Tips for the best shots:
- Arrive early morning (sunrise to 9 AM) for soft light and misty conditions
- Bring a wide-angle lens to capture both tree and expansive meadow
- Visit on weekdays for fewer people in the frame
- Olympic Park is easily reached by subway: Mongchontoseong Station (Line 8) or Olympic Park Station (Line 5)
2. Gangwon Rail Bike – Pedaling Through Autumn Scenery
One of Korea’s most unique and fun outdoor experiences is the Gangwon Rail Bike — converted rail cars repurposed as pedal-powered bikes that run along old mountain railway tracks through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Gangwon Province.
The most popular route runs along a river valley through forests that begin to show early autumn color in September. Several routes are available, ranging from 3.6 km to 7.2 km.
- Most popular spot: Jeongseon or Samcheok rail bike routes in Gangwon Province
- Getting there: Take the KTX or bus from Seoul to Gangwon Province (about 2–3 hours)
- Booking: Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially on weekends
- Combine with: A visit to one of Gangwon’s riverside villages or hot spring resorts
3. Haneul Park (Sky Park), Seoul – Sunset at Silver Grass Fields
Haneul Park (Sky Park) is one of five ecological parks built on the former Nanji landfill site near the Han River. By September, the park’s famous silver grass (eoksae) fields begin to bloom — vast meadows of tall, silvery-white pampas grass that shimmer and sway in the autumn breeze, turning the hilltop into something magical.
The park sits on a hilltop (291 steps from the ground level) offering panoramic views of the Han River, the mountains surrounding Seoul, and the city skyline — particularly spectacular at golden hour and sunset.
- Peak silver grass season: Mid-October (for full bloom), but early September starts showing beautiful early growth
- Getting there: Take the subway to World Cup Stadium Station (Line 6)
- Combine with: Sunset views over the Han River and the nearby DMC (Digital Media City) cultural district
- Annual event: The Haneul Park Silver Grass Festival is held in October and draws enormous crowds — come in September for the same scenery with far fewer people
September Korea Travel Tips
- Weather: September brings warm days (22–28°C) with much lower humidity than summer. Occasional typhoons are possible in early September.
- e-Arrival Card: Required for all foreign visitors from January 1, 2026 — register at www.e-arrivalcard.go.kr
- Crowds: September is shoulder season — far fewer tourists than summer, better value for accommodation
- Hiking: September is ideal for mountain trails — Bukhansan (Seoul), Seoraksan (Gangwon), and Jirisan (South Jeolla) are all excellent options
September in Korea offers the perfect blend of summer warmth and autumn beginnings. The crowds thin, the sky clears, and the country takes on a fresh, unhurried energy that’s perfect for exploration.
