Taiwan’s Presidential Office Building

After being damaged during Allied air raids in World War II, the building was restored post-war by Chen Yi, then the Governor of Taiwan. It became the Presidential Office in 1950. Unique Architecture
Some architectural features are characteristic of Japanese architects during Taiwan’s colonial era, including an east-facing façade and a creative blend of traditional European elements (Renaissance, Baroque, and neoclassical styles). The Tokyo authorities increased the height of the central tower from the original 6 stories to 11 stories and enhanced the defensive capabilities of the towers and corners. Construction began on June 1, 1912, and was completed on March 31, 1919, with a total budget of 2.8 million Japanese yen. Upon completion, it became one of the most renowned structures in Taiwan during the Japanese rule.
Damage During World War II
During World War II, the building sustained heavy damage from Allied forces. On May 31, 1945, during the bombing of Taipei, bombs struck the front left side of the office and the northern parts of the Governor-General’s Office. The resulting fire raged for three days, devastating a significant portion of the building.
