Is applying for a Canada tourist visa difficult? After successfully obtaining a 10-year multiple entry Canada Tourist Visa, Phan The Anh is sharing his first-hand experience with this type of visa.
What Types of Canadian Visas Are There? How Long Can You Stay?
A Canadian visa allows you to enter and stay in Canada for a specified period. Interestingly, if you’re also planning to explore Taiwan — great news: Vietnamese citizens who hold a valid Canadian visa are eligible to apply for a Taiwan e-visa without needing a separate visa. You can find more information about Taiwan travel here.
Canadian visas can be issued for various purposes, including:
- Tourism: Many people dream of visiting Canada to see Niagara Falls, the Rocky Mountains, vibrant Vancouver, and more. This is the type of visa I applied for.
- Study: Canada is home to world-renowned universities with top-tier education quality.
- Family visits: Meeting friends or relatives living and working in Canada.
- Work: Canada offers many career opportunities for foreigners with long-term visas.
- Investment visa: Starting a business or investing in promising sectors in Canada.
Single Entry vs. Multiple Entry Canadian Tourist Visa
Single Entry Visa
A Canadian single entry tourist visa is a short-term visa allowing a maximum stay of up to 6 months. If you want to visit Canada again, you’ll need to apply for a new visa. However, if you travel to the United States or St. Pierre et Miquelon during your stay, you are permitted to re-enter Canada without obtaining a new visa.
Multiple Entry Visa
This visa allows you to enter Canada multiple times within its validity period, typically up to 10 years. Each time you enter, you may stay for a maximum of 6 months. Compared to a single entry visa, the multiple entry visa saves time and money on future applications, allowing you to explore different destinations across Canada over many trips.
What Documents Do You Need for a Canadian Tourist Visa?
The Canada V1 tourist visa allows entry and stay in Canada for tourism, visiting family, or leisure activities, with a maximum stay of 6 months. Whether you receive a single or multiple entry visa is determined by the consulate based on your application and travel history. A complete and accurate application is the most critical factor in increasing your approval chances.
Requirements for Canada V1 tourist visa:
- Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity and blank pages. Must be signed.
- Completed Canadian tourist visa application form (Form IMM5257).
- One 4×6 cm passport photo with white background: taken within the last 6 months, face clearly visible, no frowning or smiling.
- Proof of financial means: Bank statements, savings books, etc., showing you have sufficient funds to cover travel costs, accommodation, and living expenses in Canada.
- Proof of travel purpose: Detailed itinerary, accommodation bookings, flight tickets.
- Good travel history: If you’ve previously traveled to other countries, provide documentation of those trips. Having visas or entry stamps from developed countries like Japan, South Korea, Australia, or the US is a significant “bonus point” for your Canadian visa application.
- Proof of ties to your home country: Evidence you have reasons to return to Vietnam after your trip — such as employment contracts, pay stubs, property ownership documents, marriage certificate, or children’s birth certificates. A stable job and personal assets demonstrate you won’t overstay your visa.
- Note: If asked for an interview, be honest and clearly state your tourism intentions.

How Much Does a Canadian Visa Cost?
- Visa fee: 100 CAD per person for a tourist visa; 500 CAD for groups of 5 or more.
- Biometrics fee: 85 CAD per person.
How to Submit Your Canadian Visa Application
Online submission: Visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. Create an account and log in. Select the tourist visa type. Complete all online forms. Upload supporting documents. Pay the visa fee. Print your confirmation slip and bring it to the Visa Application Centre (VAC) for biometrics.
If you’ve completed the online application and are ready to submit, keep these printing tips in mind: use white, durable, non-glossy paper; print with a laser printer for sharpness; avoid thin or wrinkle-prone paper; ensure the 2D barcode is clear and not blurred.
In-person submission: Prepare a complete application. Book an appointment at the VAC website. Bring your application to the VAC at the scheduled time. In-person submission gives you the benefit of direct staff support.
Biometric collection is a mandatory step in the Canadian visa process. You must submit biometrics at a VAC within 30 days of your application submission. If you’ve had your biometrics taken within the past 10 years and the data is still valid, you won’t need to do it again.
Tracking Your Canadian Visa Application Result
