I visited Hong Kong in late April using an e-visa — and the entire process was completely online, saving me a huge amount of time.

Currently, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is fully open to tourists with no immigration barriers or quarantine requirements. The e-visa process has been praised as even simpler than before the pandemic, making it easier than ever to experience Hong Kong’s beauty and charm.

Hong Kong is famous for its towering skyscrapers, bustling shopping districts, and vibrant nightlife. You can head to Victoria Peak for panoramic night views of the glittering city, or dive into the energy of Nathan Road. Beyond the modern facade, Hong Kong preserves beautiful traditional culture — ancient temples like Ngong Ping, Po Lin, and Wong Tai Sin, lively markets like Temple Street Night Market and Ladies Market. For many travelers who grew up watching TVB dramas, Hong Kong is a living film set come to life.

Hong Kong E-Visa Processing Time

Hong Kong began accepting international e-visa applications from February 2023. Previously, Vietnamese travelers had to submit applications in person at the Chinese diplomatic mission or by postal mail — a complex process. The online e-visa system is now far simpler and more convenient. After learning that Vietnam could apply for the e-visa, I submitted my application and received approval within two weeks. Many friends of mine received results within just a few days. The processing time varies by case.

The Hong Kong tourist visa is valid for 3 months and allows single entry. The maximum stay is determined by the immigration office, typically between 7 and 30 days. After approval, travelers must pay a fee of 230 HKD (approximately USD 30). This fee is non-refundable if the visa application is unsuccessful.

1. A portrait photo (passport-style, white background).
2. An English-language bank statement proving sufficient funds for your stay in Hong Kong.
3. Documents proving stable employment in your home country, including monthly bank statements and an employment contract. Financial proof shows you can cover all costs and won’t become a burden on the Hong Kong government.
4. A leave approval letter from your employer.
5. Round-trip flight tickets. Some websites offer ticketing services where you can hold a reservation for 12 hours to receive a booking reference.
6. Hotel reservations with free cancellation policies in Hong Kong, matching the dates on your flight tickets.
7. Travel itinerary details. You can book a tour online to demonstrate your purpose of travel. Round-trip tickets and hotel confirmations confirm you have a clear travel plan with no intention of overstaying.

A complete and clear application creates a strong impression with the reviewing authority, increasing your chances of approval. All documents should be translated into English or Chinese.

Hong Kong Post-Pandemic Travel Tips

Apart from visa procedures, flight prices have increased slightly compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, the immigration policy and visa process have become significantly simpler. For accommodation, hotel prices have also risen slightly — centrally located hotels with harbor views now cost around 4 million VND per night, while budget apartments range from 500,000–700,000 VND per night.

Independent travelers can explore many iconic Hong Kong destinations. Besides Disneyland, don’t miss Victoria Peak — the “rooftop” of Hong Kong with breathtaking panoramic city views, accessible by cable car, tram, or bus. Ngong Ping (Lantau Island) is home to the world’s largest outdoor bronze Buddha statue, ancient temples, and stunning scenery — reached via the spectacular Ngong Ping 360 cable car. Tsim Sha Tsui is the city’s most vibrant district, packed with malls, restaurants, bars, and entertainment. Mong Kok is a lively local market with clothing, accessories, souvenirs, and street food at great prices. You can also visit the trendy Lan Kwai Fong entertainment area.
