Phu Quy Island – Vietnam’s Hidden Gem

For travellers seeking raw natural beauty, pristine beaches, and the peaceful rhythms of island life, Phu Quy Island (also known as Cu Lao Thu or Cu Lao Khoai Xu) is one of Vietnam’s most rewarding off-the-beaten-path destinations. Located in Binh Thuan Province, roughly 56 nautical miles offshore, this 18 km² island remains beautifully unspoiled — a refuge from the noise and pace of city life.

Overview of Phu Quy Island

Shaped somewhat like a leaf, Phu Quy boasts a diverse ecosystem with rare flora and fauna, stunning cliff formations, and long stretches of white sand beaches. The island is also home to a warm, welcoming fishing community whose way of life adds colour and authenticity to any visit.

It’s an ideal destination for water sports enthusiasts (diving, fishing, snorkelling), sunset watchers, and anyone who wants to step away from the urban grind and let the sea heal the soul.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal travel window for Phu Quy Island is December through June. During this period, the weather is pleasant, rainfall is minimal, and the sea is calm — perfect conditions for sightseeing and water activities. Peak season falls during summer, when visitors flock to the island. If you prefer fewer crowds, aim for the shoulders of the season (early December or late May/early June).

Must-Visit Attractions

Beautiful Beaches

Bai Nho (Small Beach): The jewel of Phu Quy. Crystal-clear emerald water, powdery white sand, and an atmosphere of utter tranquillity. Perfect for swimming, relaxing, and watching the world slow down.

Trieu Duong Bay: A wild and romantic stretch of coastline where visitors can swim freely, enjoy freshly caught seafood from local fishermen, and soak in scenery that feels almost too beautiful to be real.

Bai Doi Dua: One of the island’s most peaceful beaches, with a gentle slope into calm waters. A small promontory here is home to a war memorial (Bia Liet Si) — a solemn and moving spot that reflects the island’s history. Spectacular for dawn and dusk photography.

Cultural and Spiritual Sites

Linh Son Pagoda: Perched dramatically on a hilltop, Linh Son Pagoda offers panoramic views of the island and sea. Inside, the calm, incense-filled atmosphere invites quiet reflection and prayer.

Princess Ban Tranh Temple: A historically and spiritually significant site dedicated to Princess Ban Tranh, a revered figure who made great contributions to the island’s community. The temple’s architecture shows strong Cham cultural influences. An annual commemoration ceremony is held on the 3rd day of the first lunar month.

Scenic Viewpoints

The Phu Quy Lighthouse, set atop a hill, is a favourite vantage point offering sweeping views of the surrounding ocean and rocky coastline — a must for photographers. Mui Doi (Double Cape) is the island’s premier sunset-watching spot, where the late afternoon light transforms the sea into something truly magical.

Food on Phu Quy Island

Phu Quy’s culinary scene is defined by its extraordinary fresh seafood, hauled in daily by the island’s fishing fleet. Must-try dishes and ingredients include:

  • Moon crab (Cua mat trang) – a Phu Quy speciality
  • Huynh De crab – prized for its sweet, delicate flesh
  • Lobster
  • Red grouper and spotted grouper
  • Sea cucumber
  • Spanish mackerel (Ca thu)
  • Phu Quy beef – the island’s own grass-fed cattle produce exceptionally flavourful meat

Head to the seafood market or fishing villages for the freshest catches at the best prices.

Practical Tips

  • Book ferries in advance during peak season — spaces fill up quickly
  • Rent a motorbike on the island for the most flexible exploration
  • Pack light and bring sunscreen — island life means lots of sun and sea
  • Cash is king — ATM access is limited on the island; bring sufficient Vietnamese dong

Conclusion

Phu Quy Island is one of Vietnam’s finest travel secrets. With its unspoiled beaches, rich cultural heritage, vibrant marine life, and extraordinary seafood, it offers an experience that lingers long after you leave. Plan your trip today — this beautiful island deserves to be on every traveller’s radar.
